We continued our screening and note-taking from "The Butler"for a scored skill performance -- to be finished in class tomorrow.

World History

Scored Reading Claim & Evidence and Audio-Visual Claim & Evidence work pages were returned to the students and they were given today's class period to talk with me about their performances if wanted and to sign up for a re-do or two if desired on those two skills areas.  Flex-time to prep for the exam was our main purpose today, and we'll have review games the next two days.  Be sure to spend time at home preparing for the exam -- our in-class time should be helpful but won't be enough study time to have you fully prepared.

U.S. History

We finished the screening and note-taking portion of our work on the film "The Butler."  1st & 2nd hours will have time tomorrow to finish the organizing/color-coding on their papers, and 6th hour will have this time on Wednesday due to the career sessions happening at the high school Tuesday afternoon.  Be sure to study in the evenings in preparation for the final exam!  ; )

See me by the end of tomorrow if you want to sign up to re-do any skills performances.  For those choosing or needing to do some E.Q. writing on one of the last two units, have that ready to submit by Tuesday (and to turnitin.com, also).  We discussed the Civil Rights timeline and then began a scored Claim & Evidence analysis of the film "The Butler" -- to be continued in class tomorrow.

See me if you want/need to re-do any of the six skills -- tomorrow is the deadline to sign up, excepting Reading Claim & Evidence and Audio-Visual Claim & Evidence...as the most recent performance on each of those will be returned to you on Monday, you can sign up to redo either or both of those (if desired) on Monday.  The study guide for the final exam was distributed, time provided to work on finding, completing, and studying the materials, and the HW assignment give to be sure before tomorrow to have 1. Finished the UCWP for our Modern Western Civ unit and 2. Found all of the other items in the list on the study guide.

Reading is due today.  The next reading is pp.849-877 -- due Monday.  We finished our viewing and note-taking on the "teenagers" film from yesterday.  I took the kids through a short slideshow on the modern women's movement -- email me and I'll Google share it with you if needed.  Finally, a timeline of the Civil Rights Movement was distributed -- read, finishing for HW as needed...we'll discuss it tomorrow.

World History

Students read pp.710-712 to add E.Q. notes about revolutions in Latin America.  Students then added E.Q. notes about the Enlightenment from a short video (email me and I'll reply with a Google share of it).  Finally, work was begun on the last UCWP of the year...to be finished at home or in class tomorrow...We are rolling from that into final exam test prep ; )  To accompany the UCWP I also distributed a flow chart sequence of the Haitian Revolution.

U.S. History

We finished reading the Civil Rights Movement Timeline and discussed it.  We set up a work page to do an Audio-Visual Claim & Evidence skill performance on "The Butler."  I shared a short list of context information (record as bullet-points), and then we set up a thesis area (there will be 4 parts to this thesis) and then the big, long area remaining was labeled for evidence.  We'll begin the individual skill assessment and viewing of the film in class tomorrow.

We finished our discussion and note-taking on the "quiz" about family life in the modern era relative to earlier eras.  We discussed the stereotypes of the 1950s and 60s and how those differ from historical complexity -- aided by a slideshow handout of information that addressed the '50s, specifically, and gender-related issues.  We went through a very short slideshow of highlights of famous examples of women making progress in the direction of equality in the modern era.  We viewed the "Teenagers, Years of Turmoil" primary source video from the 1950s through 14:07 -- to be finished in class tomorrow.  Reminder -- HW reading and notes is due tomorrow.

World History

We finished our viewing and note-taking from "The French Revolution" and 2 handouts were distributed and discussed.  We then began reading pp.708-712 in the World History textbook to capture some more examples of revolutions (Latin American case studies) for our E.Q. notes. -- to be finished in class tomorrow.

U.S. History

We finished "The Presidents" DVD.  Add to your Global Issues C.Q. page the extra title "Modern U.S.," as we'll continue adding questions to this same collection.  A new Unit-Closure Work Page (Modern U.S.) was distributed -- for our remaining IN-CLASS activities, we'll take notes directly onto this page.  We addressed #s 2, 3, & 4 from "Crash Course: Cold War" and a slideshow on U.S. and Soviet propaganda (email me and I'll reply with a Google share of the short slideshow).  See the U.S. blog post about the "Family Life" quiz...

We continued our E.Q. note-taking during the film on the French Revolution (we viewed until ~1:24:00) -- to be finished in class tomorrow.  A spelling helper page was distributed.

U.S. History

We finished "The Presidents" episode from Friday.  Students took a "Family Life" quiz to address some social history myths versus historical facts regarding daily life in the Post-War Era U.S.  We discussed and added notes to it.  We began viewing a primary source documentary about teenagers (1950s) while adding a few notes to our UCWP -- to be finished in class tomorrow.

We viewed two video clips about the internment of Japanese-Americans, read/discussed edited excerpts of the poem "Hey, Look!  The Abyss."  The UCWP was distributed and students worked collaboratively to finish it -- finish for homework as needed.

World History

We took E.Q. notes and added some C.Q.s while viewing the first 40 minutes of the History Channel documentary on The French Revolution (available on You Tube...it's the one that is 1:30:00 long).

U.S. History

The U.C.W.P. for the Global Issues unit should be done.  KEEP your Global Issues E.Q. notes for now!  We added the "Modern U.S." unit name to the top of our "Global Issues" C.Q. page, as we'll continue adding questions to the same page; some students will choose to do some research from either or both units, depending on current research scores and personal choice.  The last U.C.W.P. was distributed -- "Modern U.S.," and we are taking notes directly onto it as we go through our remaining instructional activities.  Today, that included "Crash Course U.S. History: Cold War" (from You Tube) and a slideshow presentation I did on Cold War Propaganda -- I can share the slideshow with you if you email me, and it will take a bit of talking through for the additional explanations (from me or a reliable classmate).

We finished the Shoah slideshow, notes, and discussion.  We did a slideshow (w/ notes, discussion, and video clips) on the case study of Jesse owens.  We read two articles (in one, small packet) on the internment of Japanese-Americans -- finish for homework as needed.  Reminder -- next textbook reading notes are due this Friday.

World History

We finished the Haitian Rev. video analysis.

U.S. History

In 2nd hour we viewed the 7 1/2 minute Internment video featuring an interview with George Takei (avail. on You tube).  In 2nd and 6th hours we discussed the History Channel and PBS articles on the internment.  In all hours we read and discussed the poem "Hey, Look!  The Abyss" (excerpted and edited for classroom use -- pick up one of my handouts of it).  UCWP for this unit was distributed, worked on, and assigned to be finished for homework.

We finished the Shoah slideshow with handouts, notes, and discussion.  We took notes from and discussed a very short slideshow about Jesse Owens, which includes 2 quick video clips.  We watched 2 short video clips about the internment of Japanese-Americans and read 2 quick articles (copied into one, short 2-page packet).

Students collaborated on the notes for the reading due today.  The next reading HW is due Friday -- pp.788-818.  We defined the terms "Shoah" and "Holocaust" on our notes and then finished viewing the Elie Wiesel video detailed Friday (with note-taking).  We began note-taking and discussion from a slideshow about the Shoah -- to be finished in class tomorrow.  If you were absent, email me, and I'll reply with a Google share of the slideshow for you.

World History

We finished setting up our "cheat sheet" notes for the film and then began our individual, scored analysis of "Egalite For All:  Toussaint L'Ouverture and The Haitian Revolution."  This will be completed in class tomorrow.  If you were absent, see me to set up a time to make up this skill assessment.

U.S. History

We finished our note-taking and discussion from the Shoah slideshow -- email me and I'll reply with a Google share of the slideshow.  There are also 2 handouts -- one to complete and one to read through carefully; pick those up from the tray at the side of the classroom.

We discussed some more family anecdotes about the Great Depression.  We then began our focus on the Holocaust by taking notes on the You Tube video "Oprah and Elie Wiesel Visit Auschwitz" (through 25:00) -- to be finished in class Monday.

Students finished the analysis of the Danticat excerpt about the Haitian Revolution -- if you were absent, see me to set up a time to make up this scored assessment.  The scored A/V Claim & Evidence work on the Renaissance video was returned and discussed.  Students then began work on a scored A/V Claim & Evidence on the Haitian Revolution (from video) -- see me to set up a time to make up this scored skill assessment.

U.S. History

We discussed themes, key facts, and questions as a class, informally as I recorded all of those items on the SMARTboard.  We then continued our study of the Holocaust by way of info from various experts assembled into a slideshow -- themes, patterns, specific evidence, propaganda images, etc. -- email me and I'll reply with a Google share of the slideshow.  Today we got through slide #8.

We finished our Socratic discussion.  If you were gone, be sure to hook up with a reliable classmate to get the notes.  We began note-taking on a BBC documentary about WWI, "The Necessary War" -- viewing through 20:00.  Students checked in with each other on the big themes from the reading and note-taking that was due today; the next assignment is due Monday -- pp.760-787.

World History

Reminder -- the Unit-Closure Work Page should now be finished.  (Get caught up ASAP if you didn't do that bit of homework last night as assigned.)  We began our new unit "Modern Western Civilization" by using our Mental Map Timeline as a point of discussion and setting up our new E.Q. page: 1.  Who are revolutionaries   (and)  2. What was the Enlightenment.  (See me or a reliable classmate for the clarifying discussion on those questions.)  The scored Reading Claim & Evidence work on the article "The Reformation" was returned and discussed extensively, and then we embarked on our next (and last mandatory) Reading Claim & Evidence skill performance over an excerpt from Edwidge Danticat's Create Dangerously -- to be finished in class tomorrow.  (See me to set up a time to make up this assessment work.)

U.S. History

Scored research was returned -- feel free to make improvements as desired and resubmit.  A research idea for the C.Q. page -- the Harlem Renaissance.  We viewed a 2-minute video of some daily life anecdotes about the Great Depression.  (Email me and I'll reply with a Google share of it.)  We discussed anecdotes from our own families' histories, also.  We defined the terms "Shoah" and "Holocaust" and took notes while viewing a 53-minute documentary by Oprah -- "Elie Weisel Visits Auschwitz" -- we screened the first 16 minutes (email me) -- to be continued in class tomorrow.

Students worked collaboratively to complete the flow chart with accuracy and we discussed it as a class.  I provided some information for their E.Q. pages based on a "Curiosity Question" I had a few years ago that yielded some important answers from some I.S.U. History professors.  Time for the Unit-Closure Work Page -- finish for homework as needed.  I've decided that the writing for this unit will be an individual choice; I am ready to provide one-on-one help and adequate time for you to do quality writing if you're not yet satisfied with your writing score.  

U.S. History

We finished viewing "The Necessary War" and taking E.Q. notes.  In 1st hour we also watched a 2-minute video with some quick, anecdotal case studies of daily life in the Great Depression (email me, and I'll reply with a Google share of the video file).  In 1st hour we also shared some anecdotes from our families' histories.

We finished note-taking while viewing "Guns, Germs, & Steel," and I added a few more facts from a very recent news story about a malarial vaccine.  Students collaborated on their flow charts and checked in with me for verification of accuracy.

U.S. History

2nd and 6th hours finished the notes on Crash Course #36 (avail. on You Tube).  In all hours we began notes while screening the BBC's "The Necessary War" (a 53-min. doc. on WWI) -- view through 13 minutes...to be finished in class tomorrow.  (1st hour viewed through 37:00.)
