5th hour -- finish the last 6 minutes of the 1865-1885 episode of The Presidents (History Channel)...if blocked on student Chromebooks, then view on a personal computer or come in during Advisory to view on my SMART Board. ; ) Watch the short video and read the short article about IL connections to Lincoln and the Civil War. Begin Research! We will conduct our Curiosity Research today and the next day of school for a total 75 minutes of focused, time-on-task research of some of our CQs, using the instructions on the Research Cheats page! (As for time-on-task quantity -- we're looking for a minimum 7 1/2 pages. For the 3.5/95% also add in frequent, meaningful commentary in the margins of your doc.) Submit in the assignment designated for it at the very bottom of the Classwork page of Google Classroom ("Civil War Research").

Eating Fruit Loops in Jammies 'till 11:00am
Oh, that's not a class? Well, I figured we've spent enough time in this mode, hunkered down within our homes, I got confused. Anywho -- stay safe on these intense weather days, and consider moving out of your gaming chair every so often to prevent blood clots and so your family is assured that you're still alive and kicking. This would also be a good time to get caught up with any work on which you've fallen behind...so, take a perusal of the posts below for your class. ; )

U.S. History
See "Symbolic Interactionism" slideshow to take notes and also see a reliable classmate or Mrs. Cluver for any questions you have if the slides alone don't leave you feeling you have a complete understanding. View the linked map as unfortunate evidence of the persisting issues reaching into today and make note of anything you wish to research at CQ research time. Finally, we began our end-of-unit chronological review and clean-up by way of "The Presidents" video series -- adding to our Presidents' Political Parties packet, EQ page, and CQ page...view roughly the first 1/2 of the 1849-1865 episode, as we'll have time to finish the last half of it in class tomorrow.
World History
We finished our reading, image-viewing, discussion, and note-taking about Ganesh -- see handout and slide and a reliable classmate for discussion notes. We began a scored Context & Lens assessment -- see me to make up this work.

U.S. History
Read and take E.Q. notes from the excerpt about the history of the Klan from "America: A Concise History," and also add notes from the 10-minute History Channel video and the 2-minute National Geographic video. These materials address a heavy aspect of our history that began in the post-Civil-War era of Reconstruction and continue to address it's trajectory through the 1960s. Tuesday we'll come back to the Civil War era to discuss the Confederacy and wrap-up the unit with "The Presidents" DVD followed by research and writing.
World History
We took notes on the Hinduism slideshow -- if you were absent, see a reliable student and also see the slideshow in Google Classroom -- the slides are helpful but there are additional notes added in our discussion not typed onto the slides. We also read a 1-page handout about the history of Hinduism -- add notes from it. Read the Amma handout (and see images) and add notes. (Be sure to create a new subheading for each new source on your "Religion Basic Notes" page as we move along. In 4th & 7th hours we also read the handout about Ganesh and added notes from it as well as from our discussion of the images slide (read, see slide, AND see a reliable classmate for discussion notes).

Students were given a bit of time to reconsider the Crash Course info and the South Carolina doc in light of the E.Q. We then did a practice C&E over Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman" speech -- see video and transcript. Then, read the handout "Compare the Two Speeches" and mark important info. Consider all of this for your E.Q. We began scored assessment work on a Reading C&E on the article "Call Me Mister"-- to be continued in class.

Students finished the scored assessment of a Reading C&E on the packet "Call Me Mister," which is about the era of Reconstruction -- see me to make up this work.
World History
In 1st hour we finished our introductory discussion about the Outline of Popular Details while adding notes. In all hours the student self-evals were returned to them to keep with their class materials. Work was continued on the symbols inference-collaboration work page, and then we went through it item-by-item to discuss and edit. In 4th & 7th hours we also set up a note page we entitled "Religion Basic Notes" on which students took notes on the Hinduism slideshow -- to be finished in class tomorrow. If you were absent, see a reliable student and also see the slideshow in Google Classroom after tomorrow -- the slides are helpful but there are additional notes added in our discussion not typed onto the slides.

We discussed and edited the Crash Course U.S. History Civil War Part II video and considered the info for our EQ notes. We then annotated a transcript of the primary source doc of South Carolina's Declaration of Secession from the Civil War era and also considered it for our EQ notes. Finally, time was given to work on the Chapter 17 readings with advice to attack it this week as next week we will be into our research and writing -- Ch. 17 is due next Friday. (I also recorded book numbers for the 2nd semester textbooks.)

We then began our World Religions unit with a guessing slideshow, setting up our E.Q. and C.Q. pages, reading through our new Outline of Popular Details, noting several of the last-page religions/philosophies as possible research interests onto the CQ page, and color-coding the attached map. We defined the top three terms on the front of that packet as well as the categories found throughout the packet (Animism, Reincarnation, & Release -- Monotheism -- Secular & Social Harmony) -- see a reliable classmate for these notes. (The E.Q.s are 1. How has religion affected culture/history? and 2. How has culture/history affected religion?)

New seating chart! Finish the A/V C&E practice work on Crash Course U.S. History: The Civil War Part II. We discussed it, then, and edited our theses as needed and collaborated to pull some relevant EQ facts and themes into our notes to be used later in writing. The new textbooks were distributed, but the old ones will not yet be collected until after the Civil War Era writing is done. Over the next two weeks, get a start on the first chapter for the new unit -- Chapter 17...the new unit is "Turn of the Century," and the E.Q. of focus for the new unit is "What were the issues at the turn of the century and how did we attempt to address them?" (Chapters 18, 19, & 20 will have more limited reading -- not full-chapter assigned...So, do a thorough job with Chapter 17, which is due Friday, 1/25.)
U.S. History
If you have any questions about your final exam, please feel free to visit with me during Advisory. ; ) A new seating chart was put in place for this new semester. We did a practice A/V Claim & Evidence on Alfre Woodard's rendition of Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman?" speech. The video and transcript are uploaded in Google Classroom. See a reliable classmate to check and edit your thesis and for the Context notes we put on the back of our pages. Then, read the "Comparing the Two Speeches" handout, underlining key information. See a reliable classmate to check in on what we discussed, then, as a class about the article and the speech. Spend a short time pulling some info from the Sojourner Truth materials for your EQ about the Civil War Era. Finally, we began a Reading Claim & Evidence as an in-class scored assessment -- to be continued in class tomorrow.
World History
We went over the content on the final exam. The scored China article Reading Claim & Evidence was returned, discussed, and edited. (It was a 1st semester score.) A new seating chart was put in place for this new semester. Students then did a self re-eval on the six skills, using PEN this time -- putting a "+" next to each bullet point that you are doing well and circling any bullet point that you haven't yet mastered. (See me for the eval., and turn it back in to me once you've completed it.) We also took some time to sort our our Urban Unit papers into the categories established earlier in the year (Claim & Evidence, Class Basics, etc....)

U.S. History
Taking the final exam OR NOT -- either way -- KEEP all of your Unit-Closure Work Pages as well as the Presidents' Political Parties packet, because some of it will be used in future units and the May final exam includes this material. Until you know for certain in late May that you qualify for that exemption, don't pitch...not being able to exempt would be a bummer, but it would then be awful if you'd also tossed your materials and had to start from scratch. Students finished their analysis of "The Other Lincoln" and we discussed and edited the work and then took time to pull some info for the E.Q. page. Study time!!! There will be a 30-question practice quiz tomorrow; any student who does well on the practice test will have 5 points added to their actual final exam score.
World History
KEEP all of your study materials for this exam, as this materials will also be on the May exam -- do NOT pitch. ; ) (Save the bonfire for toasting marshmallows for early summer.) Today is an in-class study day -- some extra motivation to keep up with your studies: if you do well on tomorrow's 30-question practice quiz (about 1/2 the length of the actual exam), then I will add 5 points to your actual exam score.

We finished the Reading C&E practice on "The Other Lincoln," and discussed it and then we began viewing clips from the film 12 Years a Slave while adding to the provided note page. Study -- exams are Thursday and Friday! We finished our discussion of the film Lincoln and then collaborated to pull some items onto our E.Q. page to be used in our end-of-unit writing sometime next week. We then began a Reading Claim & Evidence practice assignment on a really good, 1-page article, "The Other Lincoln."
World History
Study! Due to the ASVAB today, we only have 1 (instead of 2) days that I originally told you we would use to start the new unit of study; so, instead we will use tomorrow as an additional in-class study day. We will have a practice quiz on Wednesday, and if you do well on it (individually) I will add 5 points to your actual final exam score -- study! ; )

We continued our discussion of the film Lincoln while editing our four note pages, and consider what information to add to their EQ/writing notes. Add to your CQs the topic of looking into a write-up on Doris Kearns Goodwin's A Team of Rivals, the book on which the film Lincoln was based -- there is some fascinating information about Lincoln as a political leader as the premise of that book that isn't necessarily explicit in the film. We began a practice Reading C&E on a 1-page Newsweek article by Anna Quindlen, "The Other Lincoln." This will be finished in class on Monday.
U.S. History
Today is the deadline to sign up for skills re-dos. We discussed the final exam study guide that was distributed yesterday. We had a class discussion on the film Lincoln, while editing our 4 note pages -- to be continued in class on Monday.

Today is the deadline to sign up for individualized skills re-dos. In 1st hour time was given for students to use the Chavin assignment (returned yesterday) to complete the last item on the Urban Unit-Closure Work Pages. In all hours we resumed our work in the China article for a Reading Claim & Evidence assessment score. If you were absent, see me to set up a time to make up this work. Remember to be studying for your final exam. ; )

Exemptions forms are being signed today. Be sure to get it turned into the office BEFORE 3:30 TODAY. ; ) Final Exam study guides were provided to all students not exempting the test. The Crash Course Civil War Part II (A/V Claim & Evidence) and Lincoln Context & Lens were returned, discussed, edited, and then used in small group collaboration to pull E.Q. notes. (The Civil War Writing will be for a score early in second semester.) Students then collaborated in their small groups to edit their Lincoln viewing notes with regard to the position and motivation for each of the people pictured in the note pages. Finally, students completed an exit slip about the film, but held on to it to use in tomorrow's class discussion of the film alongside the viewing note pages.
