World History

I discovered while going over the semester exam with a student and their Unit-Closure Work Packets that a page was missing from the Urban UCWP -- a photocopy error on my part!  So, that missing page was distributed today for students to complete and put with their study materials -- remember, the May exam is cumulative (includes material from the whole year).  I also went back through the final exams to calculate which students' exam scores were potentially influenced enough by the questions based on that missing page that it could have affected their overall semester grade -- there were three students for whom that made a difference.  Those students (who moved from a D+ to a C- or from a C+ to a B-) will receive a letter in the mail indicating such.  The bulk of the class time was for preparing for tomorrow's Socratic discussion: finish the note-taking detailed for Friday, read over the Socratic score sheet, and also see the "Socratic Cheats" doc in Google Classroom > Classwork > Socratic > Socratic Cheats.

KCC

Reading Day!  Chapter 15 notes are due this Friday; after today that work is homework.  ; )

We edited out thesis for "The Other Lincoln" via Smart board.  Complete #s 1-10 of the Unit-Closure Work Packet that was distributed yesterday.  We then began analysis of Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman?" speech -- viewing the clip and doing a practice Claim & Evidence on it. (I provided some context information to take down as notes on your C&E paper first -- see a reliable classmate for those notes.) Tuesday we will watch it for a second time to complete the C&E and then have important follow-up discussion with another handout.

World History

5th hour collaborated on their EQ notes from the Dalai Lama article.  In all hours we looked at a few slides of images and quotes of/from the Dalai Lama and then viewed a brief video about him, Buddhism, and monastic life.  Please add some EQs and CQs from these sources.  We then began work on a note page handout to guide us through a Buddhist primary source -- the Dhammapadda -- to be used in Socratic discussion Wednesday.  We will finish the reading and note-taking prep work in class on Tuesday.

KCC

We edited our "The Other Lincoln" thesis via Smart Board.  Today is reading day 1 of 2 (the other is next Tuesday) -- be mindful that Chapter 15 is due next Friday and will take ~4 hours of focused work; be sure to plan out when you will work on this, as our 2 in-class days won't get the job completed.  I do hope it helps take the edge off, however.  ; )

Thursday, January 16, 2020

U.S. History

We finished our discussion on Lincoln, adding a CQ suggestion.  Make a note on your EQ page, "See Lincoln notes" so you don't forget you can use all of these as needed in your writing later; then, collaborate with some peers to add some big EQ themes from our study of the film.  We then did a practice Claim & Evidence on "The Other Lincoln" -- thesis to be discussed tomorrow. We began work on the Unit-Closure Work Packet (not going past #10) as a pause-and-review work before proceeding with the remaining instructional activities.
