KCC

Writing day!  The writing is due in Google Classroom (highlighted and formatted correctly) and turnitin.com (UNhighlighted) by 11:59 pm Sunday.  The assigned parts of Chapter 13 reading and note-taking are due at the start of class Monday.  Today is the day to sign up for skills re-dos.  We will be doing an A/V C&E and a Context & Lens next week; so, that means if you'd like to do a Reading C&E, you need to let me know that today.  I will then prepare the materials to have ready for you to complete next week with next Friday as the deadline for completing that work.  I also distributed the final exam study guide today.

U.S. History

Take a look at the Revolution Writing (EQ) that has been returned in Google Classroom -- see your score and then open the doc to see the comments in the margins.  If there is no score, be sure to check if you turned it in and check to see if it was returned to you to remedy an originality check issue or to correct the formatting (should be MLA).  The writing scores will be entered into Power School Monday to give everyone a chance to remedy silly errors before it registers into the grade. (If the writing, however, pulls one up from being ineligible, I will email such to the Activities Director.)  We self-checked the thesis for "Hayfoot, Strawfoot!" via SMART Board and with discussion and then discussed the contents of the rest of the article together casually.  Collaborate to pull some EQ-relevant info from the article onto your EQ page.  We reviewed just the highlighted parts of the Civil War Timeline that we had worked with on Tuesday and then finished highlighting the last couple of select items (see a reliable classmate if you were absent).  We then set up for analyzing a few, select clips from the 2013 film Twelve Years a Slave -- pick up the note taking handout and a helper page of the human rights and copy from a reliable classmate onto the back of the note page the few context & lens notes I provided via SMART Board to set up the scene.

World History

Finish reading the Mesopotamia reading source while taking notes onto the trends note page provided -- finish for homework as needed.

KCC

Last writing day!  The writing is due in Google Classroom and in turnitin.com by Sunday night.

U.S. History

Finish the "Hayfoot, Strawfoot!" Claim & Evidence.

World History

We set up our new E.Q. page with a definition of "Civilized" and discussion and then the question: "Were urban cultures civilized?" with more discussion.  See a reliable classmate for this set up.  Also, be mindful that we have now covered that technically, according the the original definition of "civilized" urban cultures ARE, indeed, the very definition of the word...HOWEVER, the term has taken on a positive connotation and "uncivilized" a negative connotation as a result of how those terms have been used to label and categorize societies.  The assignment in our E.Q. notes (and later writing), therefore, is to assess carefully each of our case studies for aspects that are advanced and moral as well as aspects that are not advanced or moral.  (Humans and their cultures are complex.)  Next, collaborate to pull E.Q.-relevant information about the Urban Jews into the two E.Q. columns (yes/+ and no/-).  We then finished discussing and color-coding the rest of the Outline of Popular Details packet.  A trends note page for early Mesopotamian urban cultures was distributed to use on the reading uploaded into the stream of Google Classroom -- work on this for ~15 minutes -- we'll finish the rest in class tomorrow.

WEDNESDAY KCC

Day 3 of 4 for writing -- FINISH your rough draft before tomorrow.  Tomorrow is editing day!  ; )

WEDNESDAY U.S. History

Do a practice Reading Claim & Evidence on Bruce Catton's "Hayfoot, Strawfoot!"  The information is critical (and interesting!) and the skills practice beneficial.  We'll have a bit of time on Thursday to finish if needed and then self-check the thesis with Mrs. Cluver via SMART Board and with discussion.  See how well you can do!

WEDNESDAY World History

In Mrs. Cluver's absence, students took Urban culture trends notes on the note page "Agricultural Hebrews become Urban Jews" while reading the "Kingdoms and Captivity" reading packet.  Be sure to read all parts and spend time on the pictures and captions, as well.  There may be a trend category or a few that are empty for now -- as long as you are doing careful reading and thorough note-taking, you can trust your results.  Please use your "Outline of Popular Details" as an aid as well as a dictionary if needed.

KCC

Writing day 2 of 4!  Be sure to stay on point with the chosen E.Q....on #1 are you answering all "yeses" or all "nos"?  (Thorough assessment of the evidence is important)  On #2 structure either according to 2-4 adjectives or according to 2-4 of the most revolutionary people -- if the latter option, it has to be a strong argument as to why they are the MOST revolutionary.

U.S. History

Students completed a self-evaluation regarding the many aspects that affect performance on each of our six core skills (see me for this).  We then color-coded, added notes to, and discussed one of our anchor pieces for the unit -- a map (see a reliable classmate).  We did the same with two additional anchors -- the Simplified History of U.S. Slavery and Racial Issues timeline and the Civil War Timeline.

World History

We finished the last portion of the National Geographic video while adding CQs.  We then began our Urban Cultures unit of study with a few humorous video clips followed by some additions to the Urban section of our Mental Map Timeline (copy from a reliable classmate).  We discussed together (and added cheat notes) to the first page of the "Outline of Popular details" (copy from a reliable classmate) -- you will need to use that bullet-point list of Urban culture trends in tomorrow's work!

Remember to check in on assignments submitted to Google Classroom to see scores and feedback there, on the assignment as well as to see if you've received a message for revision that's needed before it can be scored.  To make this easiest on you, download the free Google Classroom app on your phone and when given the choice, select to receive notifications -- this will give you an alert on your phone whenever a teacher returns work to you.  Chapter 12 is due today -- a few minutes were given for students to collaborate on themes.  Approximately half of the pages of Chapter 13 are due next Friday -- p.376 until "Oregon," p.384 until "The Wilmot Proviso," p.390 "Racial Warfare & Land Rights" until p.392 "1850 Crisis and Compromise," and p.394 "A Complex Compromise" through the end of the chapter.  Today is research day #2 of 2; research is due before class time Monday.  Remember to follow the very few, simple formatting instructions on the "Research Cheats" doc and a 12-page minimum for the 3.0, 14+ pages with commentary for the 3.5, or 14+ pages with the historiographic paragraph.  (See me for further details or questions if needed.)

Chapter 12 is due tomorrow.  Today is day 1 of 2 for the curiosity research.  Paste your findings onto the doc set up for this assignment in Google Classroom "Revolution Research."  Be sure to use the formatting instructions found on the Research Cheats doc in the Research section of classwork.  For the 3.0 shoot for a minimum of 12 pages; for the 3.5 shoot for a minimum of 14 pages and add commentary in the margin as you read and highlight.  For the 4.0 14 minimum pages which includes at least two articles by different experts on the SAME topic, and on page 15 (or beyond) write a brief (15-22 sentence) compare-contrast paragraph on those two sources (an historiographic writing).  If you have other ideas about how you'd like to reach the 4.0, see me and I will consider your proposal.  Tomorrow will be our 2nd and final in-class day for research, but it is not officially due until the Monday we return from Thanksgiving break so you have an open window should you need a little more time beyond these two class periods to reach your chosen grade goal.

U.S. History

5th hour Research was returned via Google Classroom -- go to the assignment and see your score and comments in the margins...or you will find a note about what you need to remedy and then resubmit.  (2nd hour will see theirs tomorrow.)  View "10 Days that Unexpectedly Changed America: Gold Rush" while putting curiosity questions onto a new C.Q. page ("Civil War Era C.Q.") -- view through 33:00.  (We'll finish the last 10 minutes of the video tomorrow in class.)

U.S. History

Research was due yesterday.  Today is writing day #1 of 2 -- use the instructions and helper docs in the "Writing" section of Google Classroom (Classwork page); the E.Q. of focus for this writing is either E.Q. #1 --OR-- E.Q. #2 -- your choice.  Choose one and focus well.  I am here to help.  FYI -- be big kids and format your writing properly or it will be returned, ungraded for you to repair and resubmit (it takes but a few minutes)  ; )

World History

The Communal Curiosity Research has been scored and returned.  Take a look at the assignment in Google Classroom (the 2nd-to-last item in Classwork) to see your score and feedback (comments in margins) OR to see if there is a message to you about formatting, etc. that needs remedied and resubmitted.  After looking at this information, please let me know if you need any help from me.  (Be age-appropriate self-sufficient first by looking at the returned assignment, then I'm MORE than happy to be of extra help!)  We finished the in-class Context & Lens skill assessment on the Ancient Hebrew primary source -- if you were absent, please see me to make up this scored work. Tomorrow -- on the the Maasai!

KCC

Chapter 10 & 11 notes are due today -- time was given to collaborate on themes and I did a notes check to record in my grade book.  The next unit, The Civil War Era, will include chapters 12-16; some of which we will read only parts and some will be in entirety.  Chapter 12 is critical to read in its entirety, and that is due in 1 1/2 weeks, on Tuesday, November 20; so, we set up our new E.Q. for the new unit so students can keep pace with the reading -- the Civil War Era Essential Question is: "What was significant about the Civil War Era?"  Back to in-class work on the current unit ("Revolution..."), we discussed the thesis of the Crash Course: Constitution video they analyzed yesterday and then students begin via Chromebook an end-of-unit chronological review of big events by way of The History Channel's "The Presidents" video series -- episodes 1 & 2 for this unit.  While viewing keep pace with the new handout packet "Simplified History of the Presidents' Political Parties" while adding EQ notes and CQ questions...For homework (if absent) view through 15 minutes of episode 1.  We'll pick up at that point on Monday.

U.S. History

The scored Trail of Tears Context & Lens was returned to the students to chart, edit, and discuss.  20 minutes was given for finishing the remaining 6-7 questions on the U.C.W.P. -- finish for homework as needed.  We then began our Curiosity Research -- READ the "Research Cheats" do in Google Classroom > Classwork > Research > "Research Cheats," as the instructions are all on those 2 pages...We will also research on Monday for a total of 60 minutes, and so in terms of time on task and utilizing your expected skills shoot for a minimum of 6 pages (formatted correctly) by the start of class Tuesday.  (Due Tuesday in Google Classroom in the designated assignment spot Google Classroom > Classwork > Revolution Research (very bottom of page).

World History

Students collaborated on their Catal-Huyuk notes to pull the top 5-10 facts about that culture onto their E.Q. page to use for the writing at the end of the unit.  We then viewed the Ancient Hebrews map to see their location, and we reviewed that the earlier Natufians were located in the Canaan area, and that the Catal-Huyuk were located in south-central Turkey, which is the large land mass on the north edge of the Mediterranean on that same map.  Read the two Ancient Hebrews articles/book excerpts while recording key points directly onto your EQ page (remember to create a subheading for this section of notes so you later remember which culture these facts pertain to).  Please take a good look at the map that shows the locations and dates of our first three Ag case studies to help get perspective on how they do or do not relate to one another.

We discussed the unscored Claim & Evidence work on "God & The Founders" article -- discussing and editing the thesis.  Students then completed an unscored A/V Claim & Evidence also on their EQ notes on "Crash Course: Constitution."  Reminder -- Chapter 10 and the few assigned pages from Chapter 11 are due by the start of class tomorrow.

U.S. History

The scored "God & The Founders" Reading Claim & Evidence was returned, charted, edited, and discussed.  Likewise with the "Crash Course: Constitution" A/V Claim & Evidence.  Remaining time was given to finish all but 6-7 of the items on the UCWP (ideally #10-16, but if not completed in order, then all abut 6 or 7 items).  [#1-9 should have been finished before today.]  Tomorrow time will be given to finish the last few items on the UCWP and then we will move on to starting our Curiosity Research.

U.S. History

Collaborate to add E.Q. notes (#1 & #2) based on what you learned from the Crash Course Constitution video and from the Trail of Tears readings.  Pick up a new packet -- "Simplified Timeline of U.S. Presidents' Political Parties and read over the info on the first two parties -- Federalists and Democratic-Republicans.  View the first 19 minutes of "The Presidents" video while adding in president's names (the first 2), capturing a few CQs on the CQ page, and most importantly, adding EQ notes to EQ #1 & #2!  We'll continue the rest of that episode in class Monday.

World History

Reminder -- writing is due!  It should be turned into the designated assignment spot Google Classroom > Classwork where I have the Communal Writing assignment set up at the very bottom of the page (highlighted)...AND turned in to turnitin.com (withOUT highlighting).  The Hadza Reading Claim & Evidence was returned, charted, edited, and discussed.  Time for questions was provided.  We did a folder organization -- take all of your many "Communal Unit" papers and sort them out into the established categories.  Now, the "Current Unit" section of your folder will be for our new unit -- "Agri-culture!"  We set up an "Ag C.Q" page and an "Ag E.Q." page -- see me or a reliable classmate for the set up, question, and clarification.  We added a couple of notes about Ag to our Mental Map Timeline (see reliable classmate).  Finally, a new handout, "Outline of Popular Details -- Ag" was distributed; read over the list of Ag culture examples on the bottom half and back side of the page and select 3-5 to list on your CQ page as research options for later, except don't choose any of the 4 with bullet points beside them, as we will all study those together as our core case studies of the unit.
