Homework -- read pp.408-437 and take notes on our new E.Q. page (Why was the Civil War significant?) -- due Friday.  Metacognitive essays (w/ helpful feedback) and Argumentative essays (scored w/ feedback and invite to do writers' conferences) were returned to the students.  Time was provided in class to seek one-on-one help with regard to writings and/or to begin work on the reading homework.  We also revisited the History's Habits of Mind to informally consider what we've learned first semester with regard to the list and to seek further clarity on any items on the list as needed.  I also discussed with students about historiographic essays and how our "circles" pages are the first step (high-school/undergrad step) in that chain of learning and honing of history skills.

Students set up a new note page they titled "Finals" onto which they made notes as needed as we reviewed the content of the final exam.  Hook this onto your packet of study materials as another review and clarifying item, and keep your study materials in a safe place to use, again, for the final exam in May -- that exam will be cumulative.

Students set up a new note page they titled "Finals" onto which they made notes as needed as we reviewed the content of the final exam.  Hook this onto your packet of study materials as another review and clarifying item, and keep your study materials in a safe place to use, again, for the final exam in May -- that exam will be cumulative.  We checked in on our Mental Map Timeline and discussed why the World Religions unit is placed at this time in our curriculum and clarification was given that this topic is essential to understanding urban and imperial human history; it is an academic study of the basic content of major world religions.  (Individual philosophies and spiritual beliefs are personal prerogatives for each student, and that right and freedom is respected as a private matter and personal boundary.)  We set up our new E.Q. and C.Q. pages -- please collaborate with me or a reliable classmate for the set up and for the clarifying explanation on the E.Q.s

I checked in with students who signed up for a skills re-do -- to set the work time and/or to provide the score sheet.  See me if you are one of these students, but who was absent today.  In all hours we finished the screening and note-taking on the Olmec video (email me and I'll reply with a Google share of the video.)  In 5th hour we read over a 1/2-sheet handout about the Chavin video and then began screening it (to 3:00) with a "circles page."  (This type of page for video is a new skill for us; so, this time the skill is for practice, but the information is not "practice" -- it is needed for the final.)   (Next semester we'll start taking scores on the "Audio-visual Claim & Evidence" skill.)  Homework tonight is to memorize thoroughly the Unit-Closure Work Packet from the Ag unit.

Today is the last day to sign up for skills re-dos.  Today is the last class day spent in the lab -- the argumentative (E.Q.) essays AND the metacognitive (casual) essays (see instruction page) are both due on Monday.  Please, highlight the hard copy of the E.Q. writing and submit it, also, (UNhighlighted to turnitin.com).  Remember to begin preparation for the final exam.  ; )

Today is the last day to sign up for skills re-dos, which includes Urban Research and Urban E.Q. writing as some options.  We finished our analytical notes while viewing what remained of the Olmec video (available on You tube: History Channel's "Digging for Truth: Kings of the Stone Age.")  Students then collaborated to add E.Q. notes about the Olmec.  In 3rd hour we went over the answers to the practice quiz found on the final exam study guide.  (We did this in 5th hour yesterday.)  Weekend homework; 1. Read over one time all of the content materials for the final exam and mark any items about which you don't feel confident and clear on the meaning...then on Monday be sure to check with me or a classmate to gain that clarity... 2. Go into memorization mode specifically for the first two Unit-Closure Work Packets -- "Intro UCWP" and "Communal UCWP."  (We'll take our focused memorizing in pieces...a new portion assigned each night between now and the exam to help with pacing and focus.)  As time permitted, we began analytical work (a practice "circles" page) while viewing the History Channel's "Digging for Truth: Temple of Doom" about the Chavin (found on You tube, also).  Be sure to pick up a 1/2-sheet pre-viewing handout, also.

Writing day in the lab!  Due dates has been moved to Monday.  Also due on Monday will be the casual metacognitive writing (pick up an instruction page).  The study guide for the final exam was also distributed in this hour today.

ASVAB testing all morning....So, 3rd hour did not meet.  In 5th hour we worked at our exam prep -- went over answers to the practice quiz, study supplies and tips provided...  Tomorrow, we'll be back to the Olmec video!

Reminder -- research was due Tuesday.  Reminder -- sign-ups for individual skill re-do options has a deadline of tomorrow.  We finished the Crash Course analysis (for a score) today; see me during Advisory to make up this assessment if you were absent Tuesday or today or if you simply need more time.  In some hours we also began the individual, scored work on the Quindlen article (Reading Claim & Evidence -- "circles" page) -- to be finished in class tomorrow.
