KCC

We continued and finished the Socratic discussion that was begun last Thursday.  Some follow-up, casual discussion led by Mrs. C followed w/ some potential C.Q. research ideas on the SMARTboard.

World History

Finish the Buddhism readings (parts I, II, and III) and record notes and questions onto the work page provided -- this will be the focus of our scored Socratic discussion tomorrow.

U.S. History

We finished viewing the following from "12 Years a Slave": scene 27 to the burning of the letter; scene 31 to where Patsy is tied to the post (to watch past this is VERY graphic); and scene 34 to where Solomon's wagon is rolling well down the lane.  Be sure to record many notes and reflections.  Also, add to your paper a note of which part of the film that we viewed was the most thought-provoking for you and why (bullet-point notes is fine).  Finally, email me and I will reply with an attachment of a slide of images that shows Patsy and also shows the actress Lupita Nyong'o (not in character) so you can add deep-thinking notes of reflection about humanity, images, perceptions, and treatment of others.  KEEP this note page to use in our "12 Years a Slave" AND "Lincoln" Socratic discussion to be held next week.  We began individual, scored "Context & Lens" work on "Lincoln" -- to be finished in class tomorrow.  If you were absent, see me to set up a time to make up this assessment.  ; )

World History

We finished our case study work on the Dalai Lama -- in 3rd hour we watched the 8-minute video and in 5th hour we viewed the images and read over the quotes -- all via SMARTboard.  (Email me and I'll reply with the file as an attachment for you.)  For all of that work, add to your E.Q. and C.Q. pages!  In both hours students finished their work on the 3-part reading and note-page on Buddhism in preparation for the scored Socratic discussion that will take place tomorrow.  We also finished the final 5 slides of the Buddhism Basic Notes slideshow -- email me and I'll reply with a Google share of it.

U.S. History

We edited, discussed, self-scored (practice) and charted the "Hayfoot, Strawfoot!" claim & reading work.  Students collaborated to pull E.Q. notes and C.Q. questions from the article.  We then began our analysis of select clips from the film "12 Years a Slave" -- pick up a notes page and Human Rights handout for reference.  Copy onto the back side of the notes page the contextual info I provided via SMARTboard (see a reliable classmate).  We viewed Scene 8 through the wagon arriving at the big house an scene 12 through the plantation owner's wife on the porch, walking away.

World History

Students finished their scored work on the Bhagavad Gita excerpts and context -- Context & Lens score...See me to schedule a time to make up this work if you've been absent.  We began our "Buddhism Basic Notes" from an instructional slideshow and then from a series of quotes and a short video about/from the Dalai Lama.  Email me and I'll reply with a Google share of the sources.  In some hours students read a short article about the Dalai Lama accompanied with a map handout to show the location of Tibet.  (We'll come back to "Bizarre Foods: Japan" as a refresher/energy boost sometime next week.)

U.S. History

See a reliable classmate to "steal" some E.Q. ideas/notes from the Antietam video. ; )  We discussed together the John Brown case study notes -- be sure to talk through with a reliable classmate to make sure you have all of the important ideas as well as clarity about them.  Then, see what E.Q. relevant info you can pull from the case study onto your E.Q. page.  We read aloud together excerpts from the primary source of South Carolina's secession declaration -- pick up a copy and read through it.  See a reliable classmate for the short discussion we had about the primary cause of their secession and their legal argument.  Finally, I distributed the work page for our next Reading Claim & Evidence (that will be for an article by Catton) and encouraged the kids to USE their 1/2-sheet "Claim & Evidence Tricks" when doing the work during class tomorrow (when a sub will be here).  (Extra copies of the "Tricks" page were made available.)

World History

We finished setting up our E.Q. and C.Q. pages (see a reliable classmate).  I took students through a slideshow of quotes from different religions and philosophies w/ an image clue to have them guess the religion/philosophy just as a hook to get them into the unit while also seeing both the diversity and the commonality between the belief systems.  A new Outline on Popular Details was provided (which will be valuable also at UCWP time); for today read through all of it and see what piques your curiosity -- add it to your CQ page.  Finally, we began collaborative work with the symbols work page.  Pick up a paper and have your group catch you up with what they've done so far -- to be finished in class tomorrow.

U.S. History

We finished our exam review (and note-taking to put with our study materials) to be helpful in May.  We continued our Civil War studies that were just barely begun prior to the exam...We set up our E.Q. and C.Q. pages (see a reliable classmate for set up).  The scored A/V Claim & Evidence (Crash Course circles) and Reading Claim & Evidence (Quindlen circles) were returned to the students; these scores were on 1st semester.  Please edit your thesis answers and then pull from them anything that helps to answer the E.Q. on the new E.Q. page.

U.S. History

Students set up a new note page they titled "Finals" onto which they made notes as needed as we reviewed the content of the final exam.  Hook this onto your packet of study materials as another review and clarifying item, and keep your study materials in a safe place to use, again, for the final exam in May -- that exam will be cumulative.

The deadline to signup for skill re-dos is this Friday; look over your Skills Tracking Page (or see me) to see your most recent scores on each of the six skills.  See me for extra coaching as needed, and be sure to sign up by Friday if you wish to re-do any skill/s.  Due to the snow days in the week prior to break, we are unable to do another round of assigned (mandatory, in-class) Context & Lens and Audio-visual Claim/Evidence; I will add to every student's score for one of these skills (their individual choice) the 0.5 increase that is typical of most students upon a second, scored performance.  Curiosity research (completed on the Friday before break) is due today -- please submit with the 1/2-page score sheet.  We went to the lab to begin the end-of-unit writing, and we'll be back in the lab to work on this tomorrow.  The essays are due Friday.  (We will do our casual, metacognitive writing on Wednesday, and then roll into direct, guided preparation for the final exam.)
